What is a melamine panel board ?
Essentially, melamine boards are described as a low pressure laminate. Manufactured by impregnating essentially a paper with the organic compound melamine C3H6N6 (melamine resin is formed through polymerization) and bonding to a core board through a continuous process. Taking out the science. There is a tank of melamine solution, a large roll of essentially paper dipped into the tank and is rolled on to the core board. As the core board passes. The board passes through a set of rollers at a low pressure (300 to 500 pounds per square inch) bonding the melamine to the board. This board is available in a wide variety of colours.
Advantages of Melamine
When considering whether or not melamine board is a good option, you of course want to know the advantages. Melamine has several:
Durability – Melamine is durable, some what, scratch-resistant, waterproof, stain-resistant, and easy to clean.
Perfect finish – Melamine is available in a wide selection of textures and natural wood grains, and melamine panels are a cost-effective, multipurpose option for adding colour, texture, and finishes to designs and projects.
Budget-friendly – Melamine board is a budget-friendly option without sacrificing quality and durability. It can save money and time during application because there is no need to sand or finish as with solid wood.
Disadvantages of Melamine
As with almost anything, there are also disadvantages. Such is the case with melamine. For example, while the material itself is waterproof, if water penetrates into the particleboard underneath, it may cause the melamine to warp. Another potential disadvantage comes from improper installation. While melamine is very sturdy, if not installed correctly, the particleboard substrate can sustain damage and cause the melamine to chip. Melamine is a low pressure laminate meaning over time it will show signs of wear and tear. However this can easily be replaced. Since melamine board edges are unfinished, melamine requires an edge banding to cover the edges.
